teaming with microbes pdf free download is a story of a bold new approach to agriculture that could help in our effort to become more sustainable, in a world where the limited resources of fossil fuels will constrain our lifestyles and economic activity in profound ways. Chemical fertilizers, almost without exception, are made from petroleum byproducts. In contrast, the rich humus from healthy soil–which helps plants grow bigger — is created by bacterial action on organic matter. When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial substances, many of them toxic to humans as well as other forms of life.

The first part of teaming with microbes: the organic gardener’s guide to the soil food web, revised edition pdf takes us on a journey through the various ways soil life sustains plant life. The scientific understanding of microbiology behind this process is far more complex than most of us realize, but its overall effect is simple. When healthy soil sustains healthy plants, both are more resistant to pests and disease, more capable of growing under adverse conditions, more nutritious for us to eat, and more capable of fixing nitrogen (which greatly reduces the need for chemical fertilizers).

ABOUT THE BOOK Teaming With Microbes PDF free download

Smart gardeners know that soil is anything but an inert substance. Healthy soil is teeming with life — not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial substances, many of them toxic to humans as well as other forms of life. But there is an alternative to this vicious circle: to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web — the complex world of soil-dwelling organisms whose interactions create a nurturing environment for plants. By eschewing jargon and overly technical language, the authors make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from devotees of organic gardening techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals.
